This is the latest electric waffle-maker from Chef's Choice, which makes a series of generally well-reviewed waffle makers. It looks like the classic models from GE. I've only used this machine twice, and I have not used any other waffle makers. This model makes "classic" (thin) waffles not "Belgian" (thick) waffles. (It is unrelated to the much pricier 850 model, which makes more, thicker waffles and has more controls.)
So far I'm very satisfied: it makes good waffles quickly (2 minutes), without sticking (even without spraying oil on the plates) and with essentially no clean up. We will see if anything breaks over time. However, it looks durable. I tried both the Waffles of Insane Greatness recipe and Eating Well's multigrain waffle recipe (modified to include more oil in the batter). Both came out well.
The controls are simple: you plug it in to turn it on; set the desired cooking setting (1 to 6, I used 3 or 4), wait a bit for it to heat, put 1/3 cup of batter on each of the two halves, close the lid, and wait until the indicator light turns off. There is an unlock tab on the lid so you can't open it accidentally. You can make the next batch right away.
This machine is a lot smaller and lighter than the fancy well-reviewed models (Chef's Choice M850 Taste-Texture Select WafflePro Belgian Waffle Maker and KitchenAid Pro Line Series Waffle Baker ). It is intended to be stored upright in a cabinet so that it doesn't take up much room.
The 8-page booklet that is supposed to come with this was absent from the box. However, you can find suggested waffle recipes on the Chef's Choice (Edgecraft) website. (I noticed that the box has a quality-control sticker -- I'm guessing this means that someone checks each one after they are delivered from China.)
The only negatives are that it makes thin waffles, only two at a time, and there is no audible beep when the waffle is done (just the visual cue that the light goes out). However, the waffles taste great and can be made quickly so that feeding a family is not a problem. Besides, you could buy 3 or 4 of these for the price of the M850. If you want thicker waffles, try a different model, although it seems that you will have to move up significantly in price to get one that works well and is durable.
